The experiment with vaccinating all adults in a city against coronavirus

Researchers claim that a city of Brazil records a 95% reduction in deaths from Covid-19 after vaccination of almost all its adult residents, in an experiment performed.

Serana, with a population of 45,000, has seen its infections decline after mass vaccination with the Chinese CoronaVac vaccine.

The team of researchers says those who were not vaccinated were also protected from restricting their circulation. coronavirus, as noted in a BBC article.

The findings, according to the researchers, show that pandemic can be controlled when 75% of people have been fully vaccinated with both doses.

Brazil has been hit hard by the pandemic, with nearly 463,000 deaths. The country is facing a slow vaccination campaign due to a lack of vaccines, while the average daily deaths and cases remain high amid a lack of coordinated measures to tackle infections.

Serana’s experiment

The Serrana experiment, in the southeastern state of Sao Paulo, was conducted between February and April by the Instituto Butantan producing the CoronaVac vaccine, developed by Sinovac Biotech in China.

The city was divided into four districts to determine where the virus was transmitted. According to the researchers, this was achieved when the three areas or about 75% of the population over the age of 18 had received both doses of the vaccine.

When 95% of the adults had been fully vaccinated, their conclusions were as follows:

  • Deaths reduced by 95%
  • Hospitalizations decreased by 86%
  • Symptomatic cases reduced by 80%

Ricardo Palacios, lead researcher at Butantan, said the key figure was 75%. “The most important conclusion is that we can control the pandemic without having to vaccinate the entire population.”, he said.

Palacios also noted that there was a decrease in cases among children and adolescents who had not been vaccinated. This may indicate that there was no need to vaccinate children to reopen schools, he said.

The vaccine, Palacios noted, was also effective against the strain was originally known as P.1 and is now called “Gamma”, which was first spotted in the northern city of Manaus and is accused of increasing cases in Brazil.

Serena, about 315 kilometers from Sao Paulo, has cities around it battling an increase in the number of cases.
