The face of the resistance

As I write this editorial, the war declared by Russia on Ukraine continues, a conflict that affects all of Europe. Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, and all his people made it clear to us. And I’m not talking so much about the strategic, border, diplomacy, war and above all (hopefully) peace consequences related to this conflict. I am speaking of the courage to resist in order to defend freedom, democracy and the values that underlie Europe. In less than a week, the feat of a man and his nation have brought rivers of people to the streets of the world, inflamed social networks and exposed all the questions raised by Vladimir Putin’s policies.

We had another cover in store, the one with Penélope Cruz: we decided to keep it anyway, as a second cover, after Zelensky’s image. For us it is like a question, an urgent request that cannot be underestimated, nor postponed, much less ignored. On the contrary, it is a scream, a request for help that comes from the people, women, men and children who are paying, as always happens, the unjust and cruel price of war.
In the coming days and weeks we will understand how the situation will evolve. And every day, on our social networks and on our site, we will tell you the stories, analyzes and reports from the conflict. But another thing, finally, is important to us: to continue to make our voice and your voice heard in favor of peace and negotiations. For this reason, we wanted to launch the #lettersforpeace initiative: to participate, just write a letter for peace and then publish it on your social networks. I know, many will say that words are useless. On the other hand, I believe that continuing to ask for confrontation and dialogue is still our real weapon to convince the powerful that we all want mediation and that we believe in mediation.

Learning from wars is the last resort of knowledge. From this we are learning the value of courage, a teaching so powerful that it sheds light on our very identity. The identity of democracy. And the identity of Europe. We are all called to defend them. Everyone.
