The famous died at the age of 77 conductor, James Levine, as it became known today, Wednesday, March 17, 2021. His loss comes 3 years after the sexual abuse scandal that ended his career, which was permanently tarnished despite 40 years in the musical direction of the Metropolitan Opera of New York.
James Levine dies of “natural causes” March 9 in Palm Springs, California, said without further explanation Lee Horowitz, his doctor for many years, confirming information from the New York Times.
Born in Cincinnati USA, Levin was appointed music director of the Metropolitan Opera of New York in 1976 and transformed it to the point where it was included in the world’s major operas, which had hitherto been discredited.
Honoring the classics of the repertoire, Levin introduced contemporary works and neglected composers to the program.
With his rich curly hair, round metallic glasses, expressive style and extroverted personality, Levin has established himself as one of the most recognizable personalities in the world of classical music.
According to APE-MPE, in total he conducted the Met Orchestra more than 2,550 times. However, he has had a number of health problems since 2006, including a shoulder injury after falling on stage, a herniated disc, and kidney failure.
In 2016, he agreed to leave the music management of the Met, suffering from Parkinson’s disease, which caused his disability for many years.
Nevertheless, he remained an honorary music director until December 2017, when he was released following the publication of testimonies accusing him of sexual abuse in the New York Times and New York Post.
The two newspapers cited the case of a man who accused the conductor of stupidity from 1985, when the complainant was 15, until 1993. Three other men publicly stated that they had been sexually abused by Levin, even if he had not been prosecuted.
In March 2018, the Met published the findings of its investigation, which confirmed the existence of “credible evidence” that the musician had indulged in “harassment and sexual abuse”. The opera then removed Levin from all the duties he held within the foundation.
The conductor from Quebec, Yannick Nezet-Segen, succeeded him at the Met Conductor in 2018.
