The ‘father’ of artificial intelligence warns: It could wipe out humanity in the next 30 years

Geoffrey Hinton, a British-Canadian computer scientist known as one of the “fathers” of artificial intelligence, sounds the alarm for the future of humanity. Hinton, who was awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on artificial intelligence (AI), estimated that there is a 10% to 20% chance that AI will lead to the extinction of humanity within the next three decades. In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Hinton referred to the possibility of an “AI Apocalypse”. As reported by the Guardian, Hinton explained that humanity has never before faced something smarter than itself: “How many examples do you know of something smarter being controlled by something less intelligent? There are very few. There is the case of the mother with the baby, but evolution has worked hard to make that possible,” he said.
