To celebrate the release of his book Build, Tony Fadell, head of Apple’s iPod division in the 2000s, revealed one of the prototypes of the first iPhone. It was conceived as an iPod with a rotating bottom half: on one side there was a standard iPod control wheel, and on the other side a dialer was placed – users had to scroll the bottom of the device as needed (approximately as it was implemented in the Nokia 3250 from 2005). According to Fadell, it was Steve Jobs who urged the team to create an iPod with a phone function instead of a completely new device – the player’s design has already become iconic, thanks in large part to the control wheel. The company’s engineers spent weeks trying to bring the concept to mind and figure out how to adapt the iPod wheel for convenient smartphone control, but could not do it.
