The first nuclear power plant in Russia to produce hydrogen will be launched in 2033

By 2033, Russia plans to build a nuclear power plant for the production of hydrogen, and it will be put into commercial operation by 2036. Andrey Nikipelov, General Director of the Machine-Building Division of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom of the Atomenergomash holding, said this in an interview with RIA Novosti. The enterprises of the holding participate not only in the development of such a station, but also in the creation of equipment systems for its storage and transportation.

Andrey Nikipelov said that in 2023 the technical design of a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) for the nuclear power plant, on which the Afrikantov OKBM enterprise is working, will be completed. This will be followed by obtaining a license to locate the station and the development of design documentation. It is expected that the launch of the first block will take place at the end of 2032, and in December 2035, the station will be put into commercial operation.

Hydrogen is used in many industries. It is needed for the chemical and food industries as a chemical reagent. It is also used in metallurgy and oil refining, in autonomous power sources and as an environmentally friendly automotive fuel.

Earlier, the Government of the Russian Federation approved a plan for the development of hydrogen energy in the country until 2024. In addition, the program for the use of atomic energy in Russia includes a direction related to the development of technologies for atomic-hydrogen energy. This includes the creation of a large-scale environmentally friendly production of hydrogen based on high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.
