The first smart lockers came to Greece

Of Costa Ketsietzis

The solution of “smart lockers” is adopted by the companies that operate in the so-called “last mile”, giving consumers who place their orders electronically to receive their products, without having to wait for a courier for to deliver them to them.

The beginning was made by Skroutz which, following the standards of large overseas marketplaces such as Amazon and Alibaba, has already installed Skroutz Points in 20 locations in Attica, such as Avin gas stations, Cityzen parking lots and within Goody’s stores.

The possibility of delivery to “Skroutz Point” applies to those who shop from the company’s marketplace and not just from a partner store that promotes its products.Once the product is delivered to the box the customer receives an SMS with the personal PIN code to receive his order, within three days.

If the “smart locker” is outside the store, such as those located at gas stations, the customer can go at any time of the day (24 hours a day) to pick up his order.

If on the other hand the “smart locker” chosen by the customer is located in a store, such as those located in Goody’s, then the pick-up times are usually from 12 noon to midnight.

Solutions from couriers as well

Courier companies are also preparing “smart locker” solutions, and ACS is preparing in early 2022 to proceed with the pilot installation of “smart lockers” in five selected locations in Athens, in collaboration with Mobile Technology.

The goal is then to install a total of 205 stations in Athens and Thessaloniki. The lockers will be located outside, in the company’s stores and partner companies, and will also allow credit card payments.

Corresponding solutions are being prepared by Hellenic Post (ELTA), within the framework of the company’s restructuring plan.

The ELTA customer will be able to deliver and receive his correspondence or parcel 24 hours a day from the lockers which will be opened with a special code.

According to information, the first cabinets will be installed on a trial basis in selected stores in the coming months.

Agreements with local authorities

It is worth noting that Law 4796/2021 on the simplification of the framework for conducting economic activities gave the opportunity to Municipalities and public enterprises to rent to postal enterprises spaces for the installation of smart mailboxes in places of easy access to areas with frequent transit or public presence. , such as squares, sidewalks, corridors and building entrances.

However, according to market information, many agreements do not go ahead because there is a fear from local authorities of vandalism and attempted theft.
