The first tests of the RTX 4080 have appeared: only 29% more powerful than the RTX 3090 Ti, and even then in benchmarks

Surprisingly, after the official presentation of the RTX 40 line of video cards, major publications, specialized media and journalists did not publish test results or full reviews of the new video cards. NVIDIA probably banned reviews before the release of the flagship RTX 4090 card, which is extremely unpleasant for potential buyers, but insiders still publish data about the new line. For example, yesterday, October 5, the results of testing the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 video card with 16 GB of memory (this is important) in benchmarks appeared on the network. And although the novelty has certainly become more powerful, you should not expect an insane breakthrough even at this level.

To begin with, it is worth noting that the new generation graphics card (no reference model or partner company variant specified) was tested in AIDA64 GPGPU Benchmark, where the system showed that the RTX 4080 at 16 GB has a performance of 53.6 teraflops – this is 8% more than officially declared by the manufacturer (49 teraflops are indicated on the official website) and 32.5% more than the RTX 3090 Ti. True, theoretical performance and real performance are quite different things. Moreover, in more specialized benchmarks, the novelty also showed not so incredible results – in Time Spy Extreme, the advantage over the RTX 3090 Ti is only 20%, in Fire Strike Ultra – 29%, and in Port Royal (DXR) – only 16%.

Accordingly, we can say that even in benchmarks, the RTX 4080 16 GB video card is only 30% more powerful than the RTX 3090 Ti 24 GB, but these are synthetic tests. In real scenarios like video games, special software for video editing or photo processing, the difference will be even smaller, since in benchmarks the video card shows its maximum, which is very rare in the same games. At the same time, the amount of memory of 16 GB severely limits users who plan to buy a model for working with 3D graphics – special programs require an insane amount of memory, which the RTX 4080 is not doing so well with.

True, there are positive aspects. First of all, the 16GB RTX 4080 is still a gamer graphics card, while the RTX 3090 Ti was an enthusiast product. This means that partner companies will release simpler versions of the RTX 4080, which will cost relatively adequate money, while there are simply no affordable RTX 3090 Ti. Second, the RTX 4080 claims 320W of power consumption, while the RTX 3090 Ti is rated at 350W. And, thirdly, the 16 GB RTX 4080 will sell from $1199 – the MSRP of the RTX 3090 Ti once started at $1499.
