The first woman to wear pants when society was not ready for it – a story of resistance

Amelia Bloumer and the garment that changed the story by Amelia Bloomer, who was born today in 1818, remained in history as a journalist, activist in favor of gender equality and publisher of the first women’s magazine in the US, The Lily. In 1851, influenced by also pioneer Elizabeth Smith Miller, she appeared publicly wearing a wide trouser under short skirt – an appearance that caused a stir.
