The fisherman who spent 95 days lost at sea survived by eating cockroaches, birds and turtles

Maximo Napa Castro, 61, who spent 95 days lost in the Pacific Ocean, described how he survived eating cockroaches, birds and sea turtles. Napa had departed for a fishing trip from the city of Markona, on the south coast of Peru, on December 7th. He had been prepared for a two -week excursion, but after ten days, due to bad weather, his boat went out of course and ended up sailing in the Pacific. His family began investigations, but the Peruvian Coast Guard patrols failed to locate him until last Wednesday, when a group of fishermen found him about 1,100 kilometers away from the coast, in bad condition with dehydration and seriously injured. “I didn’t want to die,” Napa said excitedly, in an interview, after meeting with his brother in Paita, near the border with Ecuador. “I ate cockroaches, birds and the last thing I ate were turtles.” Napa said he remained strong, thinking about family […]
