Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveni is visiting Poland today, a country that has welcomed most of the estimated three million Ukrainians who have fled the country to escape the war.
In Warsaw, Mr Coveni will hold talks with his Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rao and will also meet with members of the Irish community in Poland, who provide support to uprooted Ukrainians, and with a representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Nearly 2 million people crossed into Polish territory after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.
The visit of the Irish Foreign Minister to Poland is recorded after the statements of the US President Joe Biden, who – on the occasion of St. Patrick’s Day – praised Dublin’s efforts, especially regarding the reception of Ukrainian refugees.
The Republic of Ireland, a country of 5 million people, has so far welcomed more than 7,000 Ukrainian refugees, giving them the opportunity to work and access health, welfare and education systems.
