The former Metropolitan of Cyprus Chrysostomos of Kitiou is guilty: Convicted of indecent assault on a minor after 41 years

The decision taken by the provincial court of Larnaca, which found guilty after an examination the Supreme Hierarch of the Church of Cyprus. The judicial authorities found him guilty former Metropolitan of Kiti Chrysostomos for indecent assault on a woman in 1981, when the 58-year-old in question was then 16 years old.

As she testified a few months ago, she had visited his office five times Metropolitan Kitiou, in order to receive a benefit as an orphan, due to the death of her father. According to her, the last time, the priest locked her in his office and assaulted her obscenely.

The court, as reported by her correspondent ERT Maniana Kalogeraki, considered as reliable witnesses the woman, her mother, her sister and her doctor.

As for the woman, as mentioned, the court’s conviction is unshakable that she had an intense experience that stigmatized her for it and made her position completely acceptable.

“His testimony lacks conviction and his actions constitute an indecent assault,” the judge said of the cleric

Referring to the attitude of the Metropolitan before the Court, the judge characterized it as disappointing since he was arrogant, ironic and had alternating behavior. For the defendant, who denies involvement in the case, the judge stated that his testimony lacks conviction and his actions constitute an indecent assault. In the issue raised by the defense that the right of the former Metropolitan of Kiti to receive a fair trial was affected because essential witnesses for his defense have now passed away, the court considered it unfounded and rejected it.

The penal code at the time provided for a two-year prison sentence, while with a recent amendment it provides for a prison sentence of up to 5 years.

The Court will meet again on May 26 for a hearing on mitigating the sentence, while its exact amount will be determined.

In fact, it is not excluded that the Holy Synod of Cyprus will also meet on the matter.
