Ilir Meta, Albania’s president from 2017 to 2022 and current leader of the opposition Freedom party, was arrested on Monday by order of prosecutors from the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (SPAK). Video released online shows Meta resisting as police pulled him from his vehicle. Teddy Blusi, an adviser to Meta, according to Balkan Insight, called the arrest a “terrorist act”. The leader of the opposition Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, condemned the arrest, saying: “Everything that [γίνονται] against him are political”. After meeting with Meta at the police station, his lawyer, Genc Gjokutaj, said the former president is being investigated for alleged corruption, money laundering and concealment of personal income and property.
