0.14% to 0.15% – or 14 to 15 times per 10,000 content views – is the proportion of Facebook users exposed in the third quarter of 2021 to posts about bullying or harassment. This is the first time that the largest social networking site has published relevant information about its platform.
On the other hand, the corresponding rate of intimidation or harassment in the subsidiary Instragram moved in the same period only to 0.05 to 0.06%, ie 5 to 6 times per 10,000 views of content by users. These numbers refer to cases where the platform itself decides whether the content violates the rules of use, without the need for additional information such as a report or complaint from a user.
According to Facebook, out of the 9.2 million content elements that the company removed due to violations of the rules of bullying or harassment, in the majority of cases (almost 60%) acted on its own initiative. Respectively, 7.8 million content elements were removed from Instagram for the same violations and, of these, the removal of 83.2% was done by self-action of the platform without the intervention of affected users.
On the other hand, according to Facebook, the reduction of hate content posts continued this year for the fourth consecutive quarter. As he claims, thanks to improvements in his technology, the problem has been reduced by more than 50% compared to a year ago.
In the third quarter of 2021 the hate ratio was estimated at 0.03% or 3 times per 10,000 content views, compared to 0.05% in the second quarter of this year. Respectively on Instragram the hate ratio was 0.02% in the third quarter of this year.
The content of violence or incitement to violence in the third quarter was estimated at 0.04 to 0.05% or 4 to 5 times per 10,000 views, while on Instagram to 0.02%. Facebook said it removed 13.6 million content items of violence or incitement (96.7% on its own initiative), while Instagram removed 3.3 million similar content items.
Also Facebook, which released the transparency report for the first half of this year, announced that requests from various governments to provide user data increased by 10.5% compared to the first half of 2020, reaching 211,055.
The largest number of requests for disclosure of data for users of the platform – due to various cases of violation of the law – were again submitted by the USA (63,657), followed by India, Germany, France, Brazil and Britain. Of these requests, in 70% of cases Facebook pledged by the authorities not to inform users.
Facebook also said that in the first six months of this year, there were 62 cases in which 17 countries deliberately placed technical barriers to Facebook in order to prevent the use of its network, which in some cases violated human rights and freedoms of users.
Facebook also reportedly removed 4.77 million content items due to allegations of intellectual property infringement and 674,245 items due to trademark infringement.
