When a new series of Sex and the City, before it was known of Samantha’s absence, none of us could not help thinking: how strange it will be to see the girls again when it is now clear that Sarah Jessica Parker (aka Carrie) and Kim Cattrall (Samantha, in fact) do not are they ever endured? Here, this danger for Friends does not exist and we have confirmation of it after a minute from the start of the long-awaited (and repeatedly postponed due to pandemic) special episode of one of the most famous sitcoms ever.
Friends -The Reunion, one hour and 43 minutes of unscripted show (on demand on Sky and streaming on NOW simultaneously with the United States, on May 27 at 9 am, and then in Italian at 9.15 pm on May 27, on Sky Atlantic and Sky One), it really is ithe triumph of friendship and what it was (on and off the screen). The producer says it in one sentence David Crane summing up the spirit of the born series on September 22, 1994. “It’s about that period of your life when your friends were your family”, he says, as if to suggest to the audience: if you were at that stage too, review the six of Friends it will be a sinking heart. A perfectly successful nostalgia operation, a river of tears.
Because to recreate that harmony, 17 years after the finale, one second is enough between the protagonists. The special opens with a series of writings (obviously in the font that made it famous Friends), which reads “the six cast members found themselves in a room all together [dopo la fine delle riprese] only once… today ». And here they come on a meticulously recreated set (Stage 24, at Warner Studios in Burbank): David Schwimmer, 54, wide-eyed, Jennifer Aniston, 52, Courteney Cox, 56, Lisa Kudrow, 57, Matt LeBlanc, 53, who goes to look for the message he wrote on a wall of the set, e Matthew Perry, 51. It all starts where it started: from the living room (and sofa) of Monica (Cox) and Rachel (Aniston )’s apartment.
The special, directed by Ben Winston, alternates memories and jokes with only the six actors at the center of the scene with some gags with famosissime guest star, which we will only let you guess to avoid spoilers, and a “live” part in which James Corden, in the role of interviewer e fanboy, sits next to the actors and in front of an audience of enthusiasts. Perry (Chandler) seems to be a little bit down on the “returnees”; Jen is the one who laughs and cries the most at the same time and the one who remembers lines best by heart; LeBlanc, the wittiest and most relaxed. “Have you stayed in touch?James Corden asks at one point. “Not every day,” replies Kudrow (Phoebe), while Perry tersely: “I have no news of anyone”, lets know. And you, spectator, are not at all sure that he is joking.
To everyone the set seems smaller than then, Aniston reveals that she stole a cup, while Lisa took home a jar of cookies. Cox, on the other hand, used to write her lines on the kitchen table. And when the six re-read their old scripts, the physical gestures and facial expressions of the used to by Central Perk comes back in a second. Today we all know very well who is Jennifer Aniston, but here she is again as Rachel Green.
Not to be missed the moment of the parade, which we do not want to reveal to you, and when international fans are speaking: a roundup of characters (including famous ones) who explain that they have “used” the series to learn English or to distract themselves from bad moments. And then there is a guest star who compliments Phoebe / Lisa Kudrow who taught her that to be “a little different»Is a strength and not a defect. LeBlanc (Joey) reveals that he realized he had become famous during the second season (around 1995), when he saw cast members’ homes on TV and heard a helicopter buzz over his head. “My roof sucks,” his first thought. And Jen remembers the cameo of Mr. Pitt: “He was really good.”
At one point near the end, Corden asks the actors and producers if anyone had ever considered a movie or sequel. Everyone answers, in chorus, no. It would be a mistake, they say, “to tamper with the memories of the spectators”, 236 episodes are enough. And this special also proves it. Friends: The Reunion it does not pretend to reveal anything (or almost) that we did not know. The only ambition is to celebrate the past, that phase in which one was young, enthusiastic and (often) penniless. But most of all friends.
