The Group of Seven has reached specific agreements on the phasing out of coal production and the expansion of renewable energy production, German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke said on Friday, according to German media RTL / ntv.
The commitment will mark the first commitment by the G7 to abandon coal-fired energy – the use of which must be reduced if people are to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
“There are very specific statements and agreements on the expansion of renewable energy sources, but also, for example, on the phasing out of coal,” Lemke said.
The latest announcement of the G7’s three-day meeting in Berlin this week will also include a strong emphasis on biodiversity protection and the fight against plastic pollution, he said.
Lemke spoke as Germany hosted the G7 energy, climate and environment ministers for talks amid rising energy costs and fuel supply concerns sparked by the war in Ukraine.
The final announcement will be published later on Friday.
