The federal government today once again rejected the possibility of delivering fighter jets to Ukraine, thus responding to a similar request from the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) which calls for further support for the Ukrainians’ ability to defend their airspace. Government spokesman Steffen Hebstreit, referring to the recent initiative of some states with the aim of providing F-16 fighters to Ukraine as early as this summer, emphasized that the Bundeswehr does not have this type of fighter aircraft available and there is no point in handing them over to the Ukrainian armed forces various types of aircraft. CDU leader Friedrich Merz had earlier told the first channel of German public television ARD that he considered it necessary to support Ukraine now in order to at least regain sovereignty over its own airspace.
