As it became clear in recent elections in Bavaria and Hesseimmigration is emerging as a major topic of public debate, with dissatisfaction with federal government policy growing steadily.
According to a poll by the INSA Institute on behalf of BILD, 58.6% of Germans call for a “policy change” on the issue of immigration, while when asked about specific measures to be taken, 62.9% favor enforcement permanent controls at Germany’s land borders and 61.3% in favor of creating special centers for migrants whose asylum application has been rejected. 58.2% ask that asylum seekers do not receive financial aid in cash, but in special cards for the purchase of essential items and 38.2% that the funding of non-governmental organizations for rescue at sea be stopped, as reported by APE – MEB.
Different immigration policy however, the German municipalities also request it. Representatives of municipal associations describe the strong performance of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in recent state elections in Bavaria and Hesse as a “wake-up call” for a new course on immigration policy. “Many people, but also communities and municipalities have been overburdened for a long time. We need more order, more restrictions, fair distribution in Europe and finally sufficient funding for the increased tasks of municipalities,” the CEO of the Union of Cities and Communities Gerd Landsberg told Handelsblatt. The president of the German District Council, Reinhard Säger, warns at the same time that “tensions among the population are increasing, as many districts are under enormous pressure and in many cases integration is no longer even an option.” Mr. Zager, also speaking to Handelsblatt, calls for only recognized refugees to be allocated to the municipalities and points out that “the lack of understanding” of the situation by citizens is increasing.
