The ghost town that would house a million people – ‘It’s creepy here’

Forest City is a sprawling Chinese-built residential complex in Johor, southern Malaysia. One of China’s largest real estate developers unveiled Forest City in 2016, a grandiose $100 billion project. At the time, the Chinese real estate market was in full swing. Contractors were borrowing colossal sums to build both at home and abroad for middle-class buyers. In Malaysia, the company’s plan was to build an eco-friendly city with a golf course, water park, offices, bars and restaurants. The company said Forest City would eventually house nearly a million people. A year ago, Nazmi Hanafiah decided to move there and start a new life.
