The National Secretary of Public Security, Mário Sarrubbo, in an interview with CNN 360° this Friday (25), highlighted the current government’s commitment to restricting the circulation of certain types of weapons in the country.
Sarrubbo emphasized the importance of strict control to prevent organized crime from having easy access to this equipment.
According to the secretary, the government is actively working against the proliferation of firearms, facing resistance from some sectors of society and Parliament.
“If there is a government that is against this proliferation of firearms, it is this government,” said Sarrubbo.
Challenges at the borders
Sarrubbo also addressed the challenges faced in monitoring Brazilian borders. With 16,800 kilometers of land border and around 7 thousand kilometers of maritime border, the secretary recognized the difficulty in controlling the entire extension.
To face this challenge, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security is developing projects focused on intelligence and integration with neighboring countries.
The Federal Police has carried out similar operations in the Southern Cone, and there are plans to launch specific initiatives in regions such as Acre and the Northern Arc of the Amazon.
Integration between security forces
The secretary highlighted the importance of integration between federal and state security forces.
“The Federal Police today still doesn’t have the legs to take care of everything, so there is always integrated work with the military police, with state forces”, explained Sarrubbo.
Among the strategies mentioned is the creation of intelligence centers on the main borders and investment in technology.
Sarrubbo emphasized that this is a “Herculean job”, but expressed confidence in the advances that will be achieved in this field.
The secretary concluded by warning about the need to raise awareness among Brazilian society and parliament regarding the importance of reducing the circulation of firearms.
He argued that this measure is crucial so that the Brazilian State can have the capacity to effectively control weapons in the country.
