The Government justifies the transfer of pensions to the Basque Country: “In no case does it break the single box”

The Government of Pedro Sánchez is determined to hand over the management of Basque pensions to the Executive of Iaigo Urkullu. It is one of the bases of the different agreements that the PSOE and PNV have signed both in the Basque Country and Madrid, and according to many economists and experts it could be the first step in breaking the equality of the system and even breaking the single box.

However, from the central Executive they strive to try to reject these possibilities, especially as regards the single box. And today, Carolina Darias, Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function and therefore responsible for the negotiations on transfers, has once again justified the transfer. “In no case will the single box be broken“He responded when asked about this situation at the press conference he offered this Thursday, to which he added that the transfer process has been disrupted by the pandemic but, in no case, canceled.

“We have already made three transfers of the planned ones and now we are awaiting the new schedule,” added Darias, who nevertheless did not want to assess the fact that the Basque Government will be responsible for paying the benefits of Basque pensioners. And this, in addition to assuming that pensions will have their letterhead, opens the door for additional increases to be decreed that other pensioners will not have.

He also defends the rise in public salaries

Darias has also referred to and defended the 0.9% increase in public salaries decreed by the Government. The salaries of civil servants have risen this year by more than 2%, a figure much higher than the even negative inflation that is estimated for the whole of the year. And for 2021, the indicated increase of nine tenths exceeds estimates such as that of BBVA Research that point to a CPI of 0.7%.

However, the head of Public Function has pointed out that “it was a necessary and appropriate measure given the situation and the important and relevant role that public employees play”. “We have an infinite recognition and debt to health workers (…) also with the armed forces and the State security forces and bodies and with millions of officials of the General State Administration, the autonomous communities and local entities that have been at the forefront, despite the difficulties in responding to public services “, he explained.

In this way, and in line with what the Vice President of Economic Affairs, Nadia Calvià ± o, had already pointed out hours before, the Government responds to the Governor of the Bank of Spain, Pablo Hernández de Cos, who yesterday in Congress rejected the generalized rise of public salaries.
