The government plans to create a fund to support games about Russian history

The information publication Kommersant, citing its sources, reported that the second edition of the package of measures aimed at supporting the IT industry in Russia included a proposal to create a new fund, the purpose of which is to support developers creating video games about Russian culture and history. We are talking about computer, mobile and online games, but so far the project to create a fund is still being formed – representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance still have to think over various funding models for such video games. And this initiative is also supported by the Presidential Administration.

According to the same source of Kommersant, the new fund will support studios that create video games of a certain direction and setting, financing the development (partially or completely – so far not reported), as well as stimulating the inflow of investments into the industry by attracting private investors through the mechanism reducing risks. In theory, this will significantly strengthen the Russian video game market, because developers, creating content with historical accuracy, will receive additional funds and support from the state.

However, the developers themselves said that for them money is the very last thing that the state can help, and the creation of projects about the history and culture of Russia, most likely, will not be of interest to large developers. The fact is that, according to Gadzhi Makhtiyev, the founder of Kanobu and Rawg, Russian developers primarily focus on the global market, where a game tailored to Russian history may sell poorly. And in this case, no additional funding at the development stage will save the situation. According to the expert, there will be no massive demand for government support.
