The Governor of the Irkutsk Region Igor Kobzev published a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak with a request to assist in the recognition of mining as an entrepreneurial activity.
In a post on the social network Instagram, Kobzev said that over the past year, electricity consumption among the population has grown by 159%. He blames illegal miners for this, because equipment for mining cryptocurrencies consumes a lot of energy.
The Governor stressed that such a load leads to accidents and there have already been precedents. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the mining of cryptocurrencies as a type of entrepreneurial activity, so that miners use energy at appropriate rates.
“It is required to establish the regulatory features of mining activities, including the features of electricity consumption in the production of cryptocurrencies and for household needs, excluding any discrimination against the population,” Kobzev emphasized.
He said that due to the increased load on the energy networks, the dacha settlements in the Markov municipal formation had already been disconnected. There was no electricity for several hours and, in the event of a recurrence of such accidents in the winter period, sad consequences are possible.
Let us recall that now Russia ranks third in the world in terms of mining volume – Russian miners generate 11% of the total hashrate of the Bitcoin network.
