The Greek EMAK mission left for Turkey – “33 times bigger than the 2020 earthquake” says Lekkas

Her Greece expresses its practical support to its earthquake victims Turkey after the killing blow of Enceladus. A group of 21 firefighters from the 1st EMAK with two rescue dogs and a special rescue vehicle are leaving at this time for Turkey by order of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The team will be accompanied by one Officer-Engineer of the Fire Department specializing in the underpinning of collapsed building ruins, five doctors and rescuers from EKAV as well as the President of OASP, Efthymis Lekkas.

Lekkas: 33 times greater than the 2020 earthquake today

In 3 hours we will be there under extremely difficult conditions. We will see buildings collapsing in front of us,” said the seismology professor on his way to Turkey. Efthimis Lekkas.

Mr. Lekkas estimates that “it is a situation that came from a huge fault of 1,000 kilometers, at first it hit the first 200 and then the other 200 from Adana to the Black Sea. I hasten to say that it has nothing to do with the Anatolian fault that affects the Greek area which promotes Turkey towards Greece and would probably create a problem for us”.

And he continued: “In Elazig in 2020 the earthquake was on the Richter scale of 6.6. The current one is 33 times bigger. We estimate that the consequences will be painful. The risk is still high, there is an issue with the building structure. Poor construction. It’s also a matter of terrain. There are many factors for a building to fall.”

In a message on Twitter, the Minister of Civil Protection, Christos Stylianides, wrote that the Greek mission is ready to leave to provide aid to the earthquake victims in Turkey. “We support in every way the efforts to deal with the consequences of the devastating earthquake with the aim of saving lives” he underlines.
