The gynecology societies: “Too many pregnant women in intensive care, vaccinate them”

Pregnant women should be considered “fragile category” and, therefore, “admitted to the administration of the anti Covid vaccine”. The suggest it four Italian gynecology societies (Sigo, Aogoi, Agui and Agite), who have sent an open letter to the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza and ask for a hearing with General Figliuolo and the Scientific Technical Committee.

According to epidemiological data and scientific studies, as it is written in the position paper presented by gynecologists, “Covid infection in pregnancy affects both the progress of Covid infection and the maternal-fetal outcomes of pregnancy itself”.

Meanwhile, the risk of mortality maternal in pregnant women with Covid it is 22 times greater compared to the others, as the international study shows InterCovid Multinational Cohort Study. Furthermore, from the first to the second wave, the number of pregnant women who requested hospitalization in intensive care increased: 70 against 277, according to the data of the report of theIntensive Care National Audit & Research Centre of 5 March 2021.

Effects on pregnancy

The data also indicate that women who contract Covid during pregnancy have a greater risk of developing serious diseases such as preeclampsia, eclampsia and Hellp syndrome, with an increase in hospitalizations, preterm deliveries and caesarean sections. Not only that: the risk of serious neonatal complications, which involve the stay in intensive care of the baby for over a week, is higher when the mother contracted Covid. And, even if the transmission of the virus from mother to child seems to occur mainly after birth (70.5%), in 5.7% of cases it could be congenital.

The vaccine is safe

According to Jcvi (Joint Committe on Vaccination and Immunisation), there are no specific safety issues related to vaccination during pregnancy: in the United States, about 90,000 expectant mothers have been vaccinated, mainly with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and no safety issues emerged.

Based on these data, gynecologists believe that “pregnancy is a risk factor for serious Covid disease and pregnant women must be considered a fragile population against Covid infection. The prevention of Covid in pregnant women must therefore be considered a priority: vaccination is a central tool to protect women and consequently newborns and must be offered to all women during pregnancy “.
