The hacker, which stole $ 12 million from the Cork Protocol decentralized platform, began to launder stolen funds through the Tornado Cash cryptomixer and donated 10 air to the support fund for this service.

PeckShield Alert security experts reported that the hacker first sent to Tornado Cash 1410 ETH in the amount of about $ 3.2 million. Then the attacker transferred another 3110 ETH, as a result of which the total amount of the washed funds amounted to 4520 air for $ 11 million.

Then the attacker sent 10 ETH to a decentralized JuiceBox collection platform, through which donations for lawyers of Tornado Cash developers Alexei Pertsev and Storm Roman are collected. Earlier, the US Department of Justice accused Pertsev and Storm of promoting the laundering of criminal proceeds through the cryptomixer they created.

The hacker attacked Cork Protocol at the end of May – the cracker managed to steal the wrapped Wsteth tokens in the amount of $ 12 million. The attacker used a vulnerability in calculating Cork ProTocol exchange rates. The platform management reported that she continues to work closely with experts to eliminate the consequences of the incident and strengthen security measures in order to prevent such attacks in the future. The Cork Protocol team assured customers that she was working on the return of assets – however, the transfer of stolen tokens in Tornado Cash can complicate this task.

In February, one of the developers of Tornado Cash, who had been in the preliminary imprisonment since 2022, Alexei Peretsev, was released for electronic supervision. Last year, the Netherlands court found Pertsev guilty of laundering $ 1.2 billion through cryptocurrencies, setting him a prison term for five years and four months.
