The International Criminal Court in The Hague decided on Monday (28) to open an investigation into the situation in Ukraine “as soon as possible”.
Prosecutor Karim Khan said he was “convinced that there is a reasonable basis to believe that both the alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed in Ukraine.”
Although neither Russia nor Ukraine are part of the Hague Tribunal, Ukraine has exercised its prerogatives to have the Tribunal investigate war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Moscow since late 2013.
“Given the expansion of the conflict in recent days, it is my intention that this investigation also covers any new alleged crimes that fall within the jurisdiction of my Cabinet that are committed by any party to the conflict in any part of the territory of Ukraine,” says the prosecutor. .
“I will also ask for the support of all member states [do Tribunal de Haia] and the international community as a whole so that my Office begins its investigations. I will ask for additional budget support and voluntary contributions to support all of our situations, in addition to voluntary collaboration. The importance and urgency of our mission are too serious to be held hostage by the lack of means”, he concluded.
