The head of AvtoVAZ revealed the fate of the former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg

The Nissan plant in St. Petersburg will become the property of AvtoVAZ, however, it will not be LADA cars that will be assembled there, but cars of Chinese brands. AvtoVAZ President Maxim Sokolov told journalists about this.

“We are negotiating with leading Chinese manufacturers. Until we say what kind of cars they are, it is possible that there will be more than one company. We plan to assemble cars of classes C and D, which did not exist before. First, SKD assembly, and later the localization of nodes and components. We will use Nissan and Hyundai suppliers in St. Petersburg,” Maxim Sokolov said during a conversation with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The head of AvtoVAZ also said that the former Nissan enterprise will officially become the property of the domestic automaker approximately in January-February 2023. Everything will depend on the registration of the transaction and its approval by the relevant authorities.

According to Maxim Sokolov, in 2023 AvtoVAZ plans to produce about 10 thousand new cars at the former Nissan plant. And in 2024, production volumes will increase to 60-70 thousand cars.

Recall that Nissan announced its withdrawal from Russia in the fall of 2022. Then the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced the transfer of 100% of the assets of the Japanese manufacturer in Russia, including the production site in St. Petersburg, to the Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Institute (NAMI) subordinate to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for one euro with the possibility of repurchase within the next six years. And recently it became known that NAMI will give Russian assets to AvtoVAZ.
