The Holy See's Foreign Minister Arrives in Vietnam for an Unprecedented Visit

Vatican Secretary of State Paul Richard Gallagher began an unprecedented six-day visit to communist Vietnam today as the two sides work to strengthen ties. The visit by Gallagher, the Vatican's first foreign minister to Vietnam, may be followed by other top-level visits, including by Pope Francis, who the Vatican has announced is planning a trip to Indonesia. Although no timetable has been announced for that trip, diplomats expect it could be combined with visits to other Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, if Francis' health permits.
