The accident occurred on September 30, 1999, when Uchi worked at a uranium processing plant in Tokaimura, about 110 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. He, along with his colleagues, Masatatis Sinohara and Yutaka Yokokaawa, were trying to prepare uranium for use as a nuclear fuel.
