Images that have emerged show passengers being carried on stretchers from a Delta flight after their plane hit “severe turbulence” just outside Atlanta on Tuesday night. The result was 11 people need to be taken to the hospital.
Passengers and flight attendants were among those injured when Flight 175 – en route from Milan, Italy – hit turbulence just before 7 p.m., the airline and federal authorities said.
Videos shared on social media showed at least two people being carried on stretchers down the runway of the Airbus A350 after it landed safely at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. A woman, believed to be a flight attendant, exited the plane with a bandage on her head and a neck brace, while a passenger was seen holding a large ice pack to her head.
Several crew members were also videotaped with neck braces as they sat in wheelchairs inside the terminal.
The passenger who shot the video, Instagram user @helloayo, recalled how the plane suddenly “crashed” due to turbulence, sending many, including herself, “flying out of their seats.” “There were several injuries, including most of the flight attendants,” he wrote on social media. “We did an emergency landing and the non-seriously injured had to stay on the plane until a new flight crew came because you can’t land without one.”
A couple on board the plane, who did not want to be identified, told Fox5 that passengers had to stay on the plane for about two hours while the injured, including some who appeared to have “severe head injuries,” removed from the aircraft.
The flight encountered turbulence about 40 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said, according to New York Post.
In all, 11 passengers and crew members were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries, Delta said in a statement. The condition of the injured – or the extent of the injuries – was not immediately clear.
