The hospitality industry gambles 11,000 million on Christmas dinners and lunches

The Christmas campaign is one of the most important for consumption, and for the hotel industry in particular, which this month invoices for dinners, lunches and snacks 25% more than a normal month. In total they are € 11 billion who are threatened by the possibility of a new confinement or a Christmas without restoration, or with this at half gas. These are the data provided by HostelerÃa de Espia, which groups together more than 300,000 establishments in the country.

There is still a lot of uncertainty regarding this period of the year, which accounts for almost half of the turnover for many sectors. If Christmas shopping can be done online, in the case of hospitality, its activity cannot be taken to the online universe.

It is unknown if there will be a new lockdown nationwide, but many communities have already closed bars and restaurants. In Catalonia, for example, they have 20 days closed. The sector trusts that between now and December the restrictions in the communities that have imposed the closure will be lifted.

They do foresee that company lunches and dinners will be significantly reduced and, in addition, the capacity for the moment remains limited (six people per table), so  «this will have an impact», explain sources of the sector.

According to the HostelerÃa de Espia, the businesses that are now most affected will be most affected by this decline in Christmas activity: those that are located in tourist areas, those that are ¡N in city centers and those linked to work centers.

These places, especially those in city centers such as Madrid and Barcelona,  «they have practically no activity and will be the most affected, as it is where people usually hold this type of celebration». Those who are having a relatively acceptable level of income are those who are  «in the residential areas, as people have continued to go out», they explain.

The sector believes that it will need 8,500 million euros of direct aid to be able to mitigate the impact on its activity that the pandemic is having, and the associated restrictions. They say that this aid would be to share losses, and would avoid the worst of the scenarios that arise, which is the closure of 100,000 establishments, one in three of those in Spain.

The different associations of the sector regret that bars and restaurants have been criminalized and that they are blamed for the outbreaks when, they point out, they are complying with all health and prevention measures. According to Health data, only 3.5% of the infections have occurred in hospitality establishments, compared to about 11% that have been registered in family gatherings.

They take Catalonia as an example, where infections have risen in recent weeks despite the fact that the bars are closed, while in Madrid, always according to the version of the sector, the curve has dropped with the hospitality open.
