The hotel room inspired by the Queen of Chess

It is the series that has broken all records, reaching beyond 62 million viewers around the world, making the book from which it was written by Walter Tevis jump to the top of the charts 37 years ago, exponentially increasing the world’s interest in chess (on Chess.com the number of players has quintupled). But, beyond that, The Queen of Chess he has inspired by the fashion world of design, bringing back that very elegant 50s and 60s style reinterpreted with grace by Anya Taylor-Joy, the 24-year-old American who is the protagonist in the role of Beth Harmon. In this same style she was born la Harmon Room at 21c (the photos in the gallery above).

A hotel room which brings back into the world of Beth Harmon, the Harmon Room at 21c is located at 21c Museum Hotel di Lexington, the Kentucky city where the series is set (which, however, was mainly shot in Berlin). It was born thanks to an initiative launched by the structure together VisitLEX, a local tourism body which, even if in full pandemic, with its “queen” tries to revive the city known mainly for horse racing.

HOW IT IS MADE
The colors of the green and brown (as in most of the hotel rooms frequented by the protagonist for competitions), between the walls embellished with wallpaper with an ad hoc pattern – even with chess pieces – and vintage furnishings from a local antiques shop and private collectors. But in the Harmon Room they are the details make the difference, like a copy of the magazine Chess Review and the same chess books on great champions that tormented Beth Harmon reads with obsession in search of new game strategies. There is also a liquor trolley with instructions for making the same cocktails that the player (who, among other things, suffers from an alcohol addiction) does not stop drinking, and of course a chess set. Finally, the real gem designed by the designers Lucy Jones and Isabel Ladd is on the ceiling: another chessboard, “hanging”, like those that Beth imagines at night in the grip of tranquilizers, with a pedestrian arrangement inspired by her final meeting with the Russian master Vasily Borgov, which earned her the title of world champion (the room can be booked at 21cmuseumhotels.com/offer/ the-harmon-room)

THE TOURISM OF THE “QUEEN”
In addition to the room, VisitLEX has also created a Queen’s Gambit Tour: a tour of the city among the places mentioned in the book by Walter Tevis and then in the series, from the Ben Snyder department store where Beth shops with her mother at the University. To try, for a stop outside the box during a trip to the USA. As soon as you can. To see the photos of the room, browse the gallery above
