The hour of responsibility

Kate Brandt is 36, works for Google as a sustainability manager and loves to find practical solutions to complicated problems. Her assignment is not easy, but she deeply believes that to solve those complicated problems (and the green question is very, very complex) one must strive to be simple. This is how she came up with a brilliant idea: to disseminate the results of the searches we do every day on Google with “green news”. For example, when we look for an air flight to any destination, we will find not only the best offers on the market, but also the airlines that pollute the least, the least impact travel alternatives, plus other ecological information relating to the country or city we want. to visit.
We thought this number of Vanity Fair in the same spirit as Kate Brandt: provide new stories and green news to help inspire everyone and, perhaps, find solutions. A fundamental factor emerged from our research: digital technologies will play a key role in the sustainability revolution. AND future jobs linked to respect for the planet will represent an extraordinary opportunity of employment for the new generations (on page 42 Stefano Epifani explains in detail why). With regard to sustainability, then, we would like to be pragmatic. And maybe even optimists. Too often, in fact, we stop only at slogans and invectives. And the slogans and invectives only get indignation, indifference and, perhaps, little action. Take, for example, Greta Thunberg’s speech at the last Milan summit. Everyone remembers his “Bla bla bla”, but no one reports how he mentioned the innumerable employment opportunities that the green revolution will guarantee to the new generations. It is always a question of perspective and we have chosen to look at the problem from the front of the actions that can be taken to solve it. In recent weeks we are witnessing a minority of Italians who continue to disbelieve in vaccines, in the Green pass and, perhaps, not even in a country that is finally trying to get out of the terrible crisis of the pandemic by becoming, at least for once, a model of reference for the whole world. This minority does not propose a real alternative or another solution, but only doubts, questions and critical issues often dictated by disinformation and fear. We, however, are on the side of the majority: a responsible, informed, industrious majority. A great, very large group of people who want to go back to dreaming and try, with their own commitment, to support a country that needs everyone’s contribution. We are convinced: together we can make a difference. On the pandemic front. And also on the sustainability front. It is enough to believe in the strength of this large and responsible Italian majority.
