As Hurriyet reports, work on the tombs of Mehmet C, Selim B and Murat C has recently been completed, and attention has now turned to the dome of Hagia Sophia, which presents unique challenges due to the intricate mosaic work inside and the vulnerability of the environmental conditions. “The underside of the dome is covered with mosaics, making structural intervention from below almost impossible,” explained Ahmet Güleç, a member of the scientific committee for the restoration work. “To address this, restoration will focus on the exterior, starting with the removal of lead cladding and cement-based materials that have caused damage over time,” he added.
