The ICRC calls on Ukraine and Russia to agree on the safe evacuation of civilians

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today called on Ukraine and Russia to reach a clear agreement on the safe evacuation of civilians from Mariupol and other Ukrainian cities at a time when basic necessities are running out.

Robert Mardini, the ICRC secretary general, said the organization would not take part in the forced evacuation of civilians from Ukrainian cities, adding that he had no first-hand information that this was happening. He also denounced “a misinformation campaign” against the ICC on social media.

“Our concern is that the intensity of the fighting itself puts civilians in danger, that in areas such as Mariupol civilians can not leave safely, that there are no specific agreements from the warring parties for the safe evacuation of civilians, nor “The green light has been given for the entry of humanitarian aid into Ukrainian cities,” Martini said.

“Ukraine and Russia must also allow the ICRC to visit prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions and return the remains of those killed in the conflict,” he said.
