The increase in cases calls into question the assessment that Ômicron is less harmful, says Gabbardo

Ômicron’s performance in Brazil at the beginning of 2022 calls into question the assessment that this Covid-19 variant has less harmful performance than its predecessors.

The assessment is made by the coordinator of the Contingency Center for combating the disease in the state of São Paulo, João Gabbardo.

The team that plays the fight against Covid-19 in the state will meet today. There must be a press conference next.

The finding in these first days of January is that Ômicron – and the influenza outbreak – have already produced a significant increase in the volume of hospitalizations in the state.

“The fact is that we are starting from a very low bed occupancy base, but it is already possible to see an increase in hospitalizations of at least 30%”, analyzes Gabbardo.

According to him, in addition to Covid, the influenza outbreak also contributes to the growth in the volume of hospitalizations.

In the capital, according to the Secretary of Health, Edson Aparecido, the increase in new cases of Covid also grew by around 30%.

The health surveillance of São Paulo is finalizing a study that will guide the city hall’s decision on whether or not to carry out the street carnival.

Rio de Janeiro confirmed yesterday that blocks will be banned in the capital.
