The Indonesian president will visit Ukraine and Russia

Indonesian President Joko Widondo said today that he would urge his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts to open a door to dialogue during his mission to bring peace to the two countries and that he would ask Russian President Vladimir Putin to order immediate truce.

“The war must end and the global food supply chains need to be reactivated,” Widodo said before leaving for Germany, where he will attend the G7 summit on Monday.

The Indonesian president also noted that he would encourage the G7 countries to seek peace in Ukraine, following the Russian invasion of that country in February, and to find an immediate solution to the global food and energy crises. Russia describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special operation”.

Separately, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said food and fertilizers from Russia and Ukraine should be “reintegrated into the world market despite the war.”

“It is necessary to secure a corridor of grain from Ukraine and to open food and fertilizer exports from Russia. All countries should refrain from actions that would further aggravate this food crisis,” Marsoudi said in a statement today.

Indonesia has condemned the war and expressed its solidarity with Ukraine. However, the Indonesian president said in April that he had rejected a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to provide weapons.
