John Dilliger was one of the most notorious criminals in American history. According to the Crime Museum, he robbed about a dozen banks in the Midwest, with more than $ 300,000 in booty during his tenure. He escaped from prison twice and killed several police officers to escape.
It was almost the reason, in fact, why the US government created the FBI and the first director of the office, the legendary J. Edgar Hoover, appointed a special team to specifically try to “throw” Dilliger. As one would expect, the face of the criminal was pasted on posters and newspapers with the inscription “wanted” throughout the country.
IFL Science reports that Dilliger dyed his hair and let his mustache grow, in an attempt by authorities to lose track of him, but his figure was so well-known for his reputation that he was forced to take more drastic measures. So, proceed to plastic surgery to change his appearance and removed his fingerprints with acid.
According to reports in his name on the Military Wiki, he asked the doctors to remove two characteristic brown spots from his face, to fill his nose, to reduce a scar, to disappear his dimples and to pull out his mouth, so that to look diaper smiling. However, despite his best efforts, he failed to break the law forever. The FBI ambushed him outside a theater in Chicago and Dilliger was shot dead during an exchange of gunfire. Or maybe not;
Not everyone was as convinced as Hoover and his agents at FBI that they had killed the right man. In fact, according to the Associated Press, some of Dillinger’s relatives call the official version of Dillinger’s death story a “myth.” A niece and nephew of the gangster filed affidavits in an Indiana court in June 2019 to exhume their uncle’s body to confirm “evidence” that the man who was shot and killed at the Biograph Theater in Chicago on the 22nd July 1934 may not have actually been John Dilliger.
In December of that year, the AP reported that the judge dismissed the lawsuit filed by Diliger’s relatives, saying it was up to the cemetery owner to give permission for the body to be exhumed. Without this evidence, the mystery surrounding Dilliger’s death has been buried in the same place since 1934.
