The Irish Foreign Minister will visit Kyiv today

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveni will travel to Kyiv today, his office said, on the first visit by a foreign minister to a UN Security Council member since the start of the war in Ukraine.

Coveni, who is also defense minister, will meet with his two Ukrainian counterparts, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba and Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov, and will visit areas directly affected by the Russian invasion.

“His talks with the Ukrainian government will focus on how Ireland can continue to offer political and humanitarian assistance to the country and security assistance,” Coveni’s office said.

It will also look at how Dublin can “assist” Ukraine in its bid to join the EU, “impose further EU sanctions on Russia” and how “Russia will be held accountable for its violent and unjustified invasion”.

Ireland has provided € 20 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries and € 33 million in non-lethal assistance to the Ukrainian army through the EU.
