The Israeli Foreign Minister does not see a rapid normalization of relations with Riyadh

Reaching an agreement to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia will be “a long and careful process”, but the Israeli government believes it can become a reality, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said today.

Following the so-called “Abraham Accords” with the Gulf states, Israel aspires to restore diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s two holiest sites, has made it possible to normalize relations with Israel by resolving the Palestinian issue.

Lapid, in statements on the Israeli army radio, stated that in case an agreement is reached, there will be no surprise announcement, as was done with previous agreements e.g. with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

“We will not wake up one morning with a surprise, it will probably be a long and careful process on both sides. There are security issues for both countries,” Lapid said. Although he spoke of a “slow process” of examining “small details”, he emphasized that he believed in reaching an agreement.

“We are working on this together with the Americans and some of our friends in the Gulf countries, on many different levels,” he said, acknowledging the important role that Egypt plays.
