It is this installation that is responsible for providing the necessary gaseous composition of the atmosphere at the space station.
It is worth recalling that back in July of this year, the Russian crew of the ISS completed the stage of testing and preparing for the operation of the new Russian system – it acts as a backup source of oxygen for the breathing of the space station crew. Accordingly, the second Electron-VM will operate in addition to exactly the same system, which is located in the Zvezda service module. Now the cosmonauts who were involved in the installation and testing of the new Elektron-VM technological unit in the instrument-tight compartment of the module report that the system has been successfully integrated into the control loop of the Russian segment of the ISS.
This system is designed for electrolysis production of oxygen – it is obtained from water condensate. At the same time, both Electron-VM, which are currently in operation, are interchangeable. This will make it possible to implement an uninterrupted supply of the space station crew in case of maintenance or even repair of one of the systems.
