The issue of Ukraine and energy was discussed by Von der Layen – Chisinau

The situation in Ukraine and the energy situation were at the center of the communication that the President of the Commission Ursula von der Layen had with the Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio.

The two leaders stressed the need to pay special attention to the situation in Ukraine, while reaffirming their consistent support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and said they would continue to work in close coordination to promote de-escalation, the commission said in a statement.

Ursula von der Layen, speaking on concerns about gas shortages in Europe, said she appreciated the fact that the Japanese government had decided to send LNG to Europe. For his part, the Japanese prime minister said he had decided to share the LNG surplus with Europe to show solidarity with allies and like-minded partners who share values. At the same time, the two leaders confirmed that they will continue to work together on energy security.

Ursula von der Leyen and Kishida Fumio also discussed the next steps in implementing the EU Global Gateway initiative and agreed to strengthen and promote Japan-EU cooperation in a wide range of areas, with a view to the next Japan-EU summit.
