The Japanese city of Fukuoka plans to become the country’s Web3 center

The authorities of the Japanese port city intend to do as much for projects on Web3, “how many large Japanese companies once did for the whole world.”

The city of Fukuoka has entered into an agreement with blockchain company Astar Japan Labs, which has developed the country’s leading Astar network, to bring new technologies to the city’s infrastructures. Fukuoka is the second largest port city in the country, acting as a strategically important economic zone. The city authorities plan to make the city the center of Web3 technologies and cryptocurrencies in the country.

In collaboration with Astar Japan Labs, the city will work on new ways to take advantage of Web3 technologies. Fukuoka is said to be one of more than four dozen Astar partners, including Amazon Japan and Microsoft Japan.

The mayor’s office plans to attract large competitive organizations to the region that can operate on a global level. Astar intends to interact with the city authorities, providing the results of its research and suggesting use cases for the blockchain.

According to Astar founder Sota Watanabe, Fukuoka has the same intentions towards Web3 as some US cities like Miami or New York. The company plans to work closely with the Japanese city to attract entrepreneurs and developers from across the country.

Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that the state will begin to encourage the digitalization of the country’s regions in order to speed up the work of government institutions, using, among other things, metaverses and NFTs.
