The Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post is ending its endorsement of presidential candidates in the US election

The Washington Post’s decision to end its tradition of endorsing presidential candidates for the first time since 1988 has sparked backlash from both its employees and subscribers. The paper’s owner, Jeff Bezos, reportedly played a central role in making that decision, canceling a planned endorsement of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris just before the 2024 election. The decision, introduced by publisher Sir Will Lewis, caused strong reactions both inside and outside the organization. Lewis defended the move saying “we are an independent newspaper and we need to support our readers’ ability to make up their own minds”, adding that the endorsements policy was “a departure from our core values”.
