Journalist Martin Bashir, who is accused of fraud for explosive interview he had received in 1995 from Lady Diana, today apologized to Princes William and Harry, but described it as “absurd” to link his actions to the violent death of their mother.
More than 25 years after this explosive interview with Lady Dee by the British monarchy, an independent report on Thursday denounced the “deception” methods used by this journalist to get her, leading the BBC to apologize.
Her brother Diana, Charles Spencer, had claimed that Martin Bashir had shown him documents – which turned out to be fake – which showed that the security services paid two people in the Court to spy on his sister. This was what prompted him, according to him, to introduce the journalist to Lady Dee.
Asked by the Sunday Times, Bashir expressed his “deep sorrow” for the princess’ sons, Harry and William. “I never wanted to hurt Diana in any way and I do not think we hurt her,” she told the newspaper.
According to William, the interview helped to further aggravate the relationship between his parents and “fueled the fears, paranoia and loneliness of the last years” of Diana’s life.
Harry, for his part, went so far as to say that there was a connection between his mother’s death and “this culture of exploitation and practices contrary to any ethics”.
Diana died in a car accident in 1997 in Paris at the age of 36.
“I do not think I could be held responsible for much of what happened in her life and for the complex problems that surrounded her,” Bashir said. “I think it is absurd and unfair to say that I am individually responsible.”
The 1995 interview, which was watched by almost 23 million viewers in the United Kingdom alone, was conducted in accordance with the terms set by Diana, he stressed, and the two remained very good friends afterwards.
The “three persons” in marriage
“My family and I loved her,” he said, adding that Diana had visited their wife and newborn baby in the hospital and that the princess had organized a birthday party for one of his children at Kensington Palace.
The journalist expressed his regret for the forged documents, but stressed that they had “nothing to do” with the revelations made during the interview.
In it, Diana had said that there were “three persons” in her marriage – referring to the relationship that Carlos had with Camilla Parker Bowles – and she had admitted that she also had a relationship.
Bashir was not well known at the time, but he continued with a successful career, interviewing, among others, Michael Jackson.
The now-defunct pop star later appealed to the British Broadcasting Council, accusing Martin Bashir of giving a distorted picture of his behavior and conduct as a father.
The journalist then worked for the BBC as a correspondent for religion until his resignation last week for health reasons, shortly before the Dyson report was released.
