The Kremlin does not expect significant progress from the Putin-Macron meeting

Russia does not expect any decisive progress from Monday’s talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and French counterpart Emanuel Macron, but expects Macron to suggest ways to ease tensions in Europe, the Kremlin said, according to Reuters. .

The crisis in Ukraine will dominate the talks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said in a statement.

Moscow denies any plans to invade Ukraine, but has some demands for security guarantees, including a promise that Ukraine will never join NATO. The West has rejected the request, but says it is willing to discuss other issues, such as arms control.

Macron is expected to seek commitments from Putin to de-escalate tensions, according to the report.

“The situation is too complicated to expect significant progress during the meeting,” Peshkov said.

But he said Russia was aware of some ideas to reduce tensions that Macron had talked about in the past and intended to share them with Putin.

Peshkov said it was impossible to talk about a cessation of tensions as Western governments continued to talk about an imminent Russian attack on Ukraine.

He also said that Moscow had not heard anything new in recent days about the security guarantees it was asking for and “our Western interlocutors prefer not to mention this issue”.
