The largest oil and gas company Petrobras announced the launch of a new project, which involves the creation of bitcoin production capacities and the use of blockchain in business processes.

Representatives of the company said that the project includes the tokenization of assets, the introduction of consensus mechanisms and the study of models using blockchain technologies. The initiative is implemented with the participation of the PETROBRAS research center and the PUC-RIO business school.

Petrobras top managers said that they follow the example of other oil companies. For example, Argentine YPF and Plus Petrol, use energy from oil production for mining cryptocurrencies. This allows you to rationally use an excess of gas and electricity, representatives of the company explained.

Blockchain technology is used in other projects, including trading in the biomethane market and the development of innovative programs. In 2023, the company issued an agreement with the organization of Cardano Foundation on the creation of a network in its infrastructure.

Earlier, Theminingmag analysts reported that as of the end of December, public mining companies kept more than 92,000 bitcoins on the balance sheets, which is a historical maximum.
