“The Last of Us” premiered a week ago and has already conquered viewers. The series is an adaptation of one of the most popular games in the world, which accumulates thousands of fans.
On the launch night of the 1st episode, the series reached historic numbers on HBO Max and broke a record in the first 24 hours, becoming the best debut of the streaming service in Brazil.
In addition, it had a 99% approval rating from critics and a 96% rating from the public on Rotten Tomatoes, the main review aggregator on the internet.
Despite being well received by viewers and there are already comments about being the best adaptation of a game on social networks, there are differences between the game and the series. Check out.
Year in which the story takes place
One change that the series has made, but which ultimately does not change the context of the story, is the year of events.
In the game, the spread of the Cordyceps fungus takes place in 2013, the year the game was released, and Joel and Ellie’s journey begins 20 years later, in 2033.
In the series, the outbreak is in 2003 and the adventure of the protagonists takes place in 2023, following the year that the series debuted.

Perhaps the main difference between the game and the series is the way Cordyceps is spread – at least, on social media it is the most talked about.
In the game, the characters need to wear masks to protect themselves from the spores released by the fungus. With that, the infection can occur in the air, making closed places a real danger.
Already in the series, there are no spores or masks. On the other hand, the fungus takes shape in the body of those infected when there is an orifice, either the mouth or cuts, and can be passed on to someone else.
Miller family
One addition to the story that the series made was a Latino descent from the Miller family, which resulted in a change in Sarah’s physical appearance.
In the game, Joel’s daughter is a white, blonde and blue-eyed girl, while in the HBO Max production, respecting the narrative created, the character is played by a black actress, with dark eyes and curly hair.

Still on the differences of the Miller family in the two productions, the relationship between Joel and Tommy is deeper in the series.
In the 1st episode, the relationship between the brothers and Sarah is shown, even before the Cordyceps outbreak – which does not happen in the game.
In the game it is not known about Tommy’s brother’s past and in the series it is said that he is a war veteran.
One of Joel’s main motivations in Season 1 is to find his brother who hasn’t been heard from in a few days, unlike the game, where they haven’t spoken for years because of a difference of opinion.
