“The Last of Us” without Pedro Pascal? Matthew McConaughey was optioned for the role

With the success of the HBO series “The Last of Us”, Pedro Pascal has established himself as a darling of fans of the series and also of other productions in which he acted. So it would be impossible to imagine it without the presence of the actor. But that was almost the case. According to the show’s co-creator Craig Mazin, Matthew McConaughey was considered to star in the role of Joel.

Mazin gave an interview to the podcast “Happy Sad Confused” and, according to the website “Insider”, explained the rumors that McConaughey and Mahershala Ali, both stars of “True Detective”, also on HBO, were eyeing the role at the beginning of the project. .

The co-creator stated that he never spoke to Mahershala, but that he considered McConaughey before Pascal and even spoke to him.

“I can’t say it was serious, it was more like, ‘Hey, here’s something we can talk about’.”

The showrunner of “The Last of Us” reinforced, however, that Pascal was on the list of choices from the beginning. “Look, Matthew McConaughey is an amazing actor, I’m sure it would have been great, but it would have been different and I like what we did.”

Pascal’s choice was almost made impossible for another reason. During the podcast, Mazin states that he might not be available, but when the possibility arose, he was surprised by how quickly the response came.

“Usually when you send scripts to actors like this, you’re lucky if you get a reading in a month,” he said. “I sent it on Friday. On Saturday morning I get a call: ‘He loved it. Want to Zoom’.”

And the video conference was a success. “It was the most wonderful Zoom I’ve ever had. Just love at first sight, and he was immediately perceptive”, described Mazin, according to “Insider”.
